War Anthology

In the fall of 2010 the Connecticut Review came out with a special section of prose and poetry written by veterans of war. Being a contributor to this edition, I received a complimentary copy and was stunned by the quality of work. I suggested to the editor that a book anthology of this nature should be produced, and she agreed, but found little interest in the project from publishers. Publishing companies did not want to take the chance given the prevailing uncertainty in the industry. So I decided to produce the anthology myself.

I plan to publish twenty-five pieces of fiction and nonfiction and an equal number of poems about war and its effects. The highest literary standards will be used in the selection process. I am looking for quality and authenticity. Preference will be given to unpublished work, though previously published pieces will be considered if proper reference is given. Experiences from any wars are welcome, and submissions from veterans of foreign countries are also welcome as long as the work is in English.

Payment is one copy of the anthology which is to be hard-bound and expertly printed. In the unlikely event that the book actually makes a profit, some payment would be distributed to the contributors.

  • The preferred length for fiction and nonfiction is two to six thousand words. Anything longer or shorter would have to be exceptional.

  • Poems should be between one and two pages. Anything longer would have to be exceptional. Any style of poem will be considered, even ones with a rhyming scheme. Send no more than five poems at a time.

  • A short bio accompanying your submission would be preferred but is not mandatory.

  • The format is typed, double spaced, numbered pages with your name, address, email address, and proper word count at the top of the first page of your submission.

  • Simultaneous submissions are permitted. Please inform me immediately if the piece is accepted elsewhere.

  • Multiple submissions are not permitted. Please do not send more material until you have received a response to the first.

  • Emailed submissions are preferred. They can be included in the body of the email or sent by attachment. Please use .doc, .docx or .rtf.

  • If you strongly prefer snail mail, send your work to the address below and include a self addressed stamped envelope for reply.

  • The anthology is open to veterans, veterans' relatives and friends. If writers know a veteran with an interesting story, we encourage you to tape it, write it down, and send it in for consideration.

  • Fiction and nonfiction of a visceral nature is preferred. We are especially interested in graphic nonfiction accounts of wartime experiences.

  • Submissions will be open from Feburary 1, 2012 until the anthology is filled.

  • If you do not hear from me within a month, send me an email.

  • All rights revert to the author after publication.

  • Questions and comments can be directed to the editor by clicking on the submit button below.

I look forward to seeing your work.
